Is Sensorineural Hearing Loss Treatable?
Sensorineural hearing loss is usually permanent, because damaged inner ear hair cells or hearing nerve fibers cannot naturally regenerate.
However, management is very effective with modern technology.
* Medications in selected cases like Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL):
Steroids (tablets or intratympanic injections) can help if started within the golden window of 3-7 days.
Other chronic SNHL types do not improve with medication.
* Hearing Aids are most common and effective options
They improve:
* Cochlear Implant – For severe to profound SNHL, or when hearing aids no longer help.
A cochlear implant bypasses the damaged cochlea and directly stimulates the hearing nerve.
